Labor Force & Unemployment

Labor force is defined as those individuals, employed or looking for work, who live in the area represented. The labor force in Southwestern Illinois represented 265,216 individuals in 2011, a slight increase from 263,559 individuals in 2010, while the unemployment rate continues to fall. In 2011, the unemployment rate was 9.6 percent compared with 10.4 percent the previous year. The Southwestern Illinois labor force accounts for approximately 18 percent of the St. Louis Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA) total.

Private Sector Employment by Industrial Classification

At the end of 3rd Quarter 2011, there were 11,168 private sector employers in Madison and St. Clair counties, a slight increase over what was reporterd in 2010. Southwestern Illinois saw its rate of private sector employment growth rise slightly from 2010 to 2011 with a net gain of 6,137 jobs. The goods-producing industry saw the largest increase, with 3,506 jobs, while the service-providing industry added 2,631 jobs. Service-providing jobs account for just over 81 percent of the total number of private sector jobs in Southwestern Illinois.

Southwestern Illinois 2011 Work Force

Work force is defined as those who work in the area represented, but may live elsewhere. A total of 239,666 individuals are employed in Madison and St. Clair counties with 159,978 of these in the private sector. As in recent years, the Trade/Transportation/Utilities sector in 2011 accounted for more than one quarter of the total number of jobs in Southwestern Illinois, while Education and Health Services was the next largest sector with 18.6 percent of the jobs.  Manufacturing rose slightly to 10.8 percent, while construction jobs continued to rebound, increasing to 7.5 percent from 6.3 percent the prior year.
